Christian Alvarado breaks New England 2 mile record; sets Connecticut record

Congratulations to Christian Alvarado who won the New England two-mile championship in Boston at the Reggie Lewis Athletic Center in Boston on March 1. Chris’ time of 9:00 minutes broke the 1975 state record, set the New England record, and is currently the #1 high school time at that distance in the United States. Chris advances to the National Championship in New York on March 16.

Alvarado won the 2-mile in 9:00.23, ahead of Darien's Alex Ostberg (9:02.74). The duo own the two fastest two-mile times in the country, according to milesplit.com - see video!

The senior distance runner who is set to compete for Georgetown this fall, ran a blistering time of 9:00.29, which won the event, set a meet record, propelled him to No. 1 in the nation and set an unofficial state record.

"I'm ecstatic," Alvarado said of his time. "I've never been ranked No. 1, or had a No. 1 time. This is a huge accomplishment for me and gives me a ton of confidence going into nationals."

Guard play superb in Fairfield Prep's Class LL tournament-opening win

By Matthew Doran, CT Post, March 11, 2014 Watch Prep You Tube highlights!

FAIRFIELD -- Take one look at the bodies as the Fairfield Prep boys basketball team steps on the court each night and it's easy to see why the Jesuits have been the state's benchmark this season.

Any team with an intimidating low-post presence like 7-foot senior center Paschal Chukwu definitely has the tools to be a force of nature.

But that might also be the biggest misconception about the Jesuits. Chukwu's dominance is certainly one reason why No. 1-ranked and undefeated Fairfield Prep went into the first round of the state tournament riding a 23-game win streak. But it's not the only one.

Prep's guards can play a little bit as well.

Newington found that out for itself as the top-seeded Jesuits used the defensive tenacity and shooting ability of its backcourt to post an 82-61 victory over the 32nd-seeded Indians Tuesday night in the Class LL opener at Alumni Hall.

"I think everyone looks at Paschal and says, 'Oh my God, oh my God, how are you going to beat them,'" said Prep coach Leo Redgate, whose team beat Hillhouse to win its first SCC title last week. "But I would argue that our guards are up there with the best in the state. They're ready to knock down shots and they're ready to play great pressure defense."

The Indians (9-13), a young team with a freshman and two sophomores in the starting lineup, caught the Providence-bound Chukwu on a rare off night. Newington scouted Prep well, and used a strong game plan to hold Chukwu to four points, two rebounds and three blocks in the first half. That allowed the Indians to feel like they were in the game down 17-11 at the end of the first quarter and 40-29 at halftime.

But Prep's guards picked up the slack with unrelenting defensive pressure that forced 10 first-half turnovers and fantastic shooting on the perimeter. Prep finished with 10 three-pointers. Its five-headed guard rotation of Tom Nolan, Ryan Foley, Keith Pettway, Dave Zielinski and Ryan Murphy accounted for 58 of the team's 82 points.

Chukwu finished with eight points, seven rebounds and six blocks for Prep (24-0), which outscored Newington 24-5 in the third quarter to put the game out of reach.

Fairfield Prep will face No. 16 East Hartford (14-7) in the second round Thursday at Alumni Hall. East Hartford kept the Jesuits from a third meeting with SCC rival Xavier after posting a 48-41 victory over the 17th-seeded Falcons Tuesday night.

"I think our guard play last year was our main problem. It was why we didn't win states. Hillhouse's guards were just better than us," said Nolan, who collected five assists, five rebounds and two steals. "This year all our guards are playing well. Everyone is kind of in synch and it makes it easier to play with those guys. We know we have to step up when Paschal's not having a good game."

Newington coach Scott Wenzel was more concerned about the shooting ability of Prep's guards than he was about Chukwu's inside prowess. His fear ended up being accurate as senior Dave Zielinski (11 points) connected on three 3-pointers while Tom Nolan (15 points) and Ryan Foley (10 points, four assists) hit two each.

Ryan Murphy (13 points, four assists) and Keith Pettway (nine points) had one each for Prep, which also knocked the Indians out of the state tournament in the first round last season.

Prep led 71-36 in the fourth quarter before Redgate pulled his starters, allowing the Indians to finish the game on a 25-11 run.

"We knew they could shoot the ball well," Wenzel said. "We were hoping to catch a few breaks and shoot the ball well ourselves. Unfortunately, when they shoot the ball like they do and we don't shoot well, it's very tough to beat them."

Chukwu actually spent the first five minutes of the second quarter on the bench with two fouls, but the Jesuits still managed to keep the Indians at bay, using 3-pointers by Pettway, Murphy and Nolan and a conventional 3-point play by Pat Harding, Chukwu's temporary replacement, to build a 35-18 lead midway through the second quarter.

Prep, which lost to Hillhouse in the Class LL final last season, will meet the Academics in the quarterfinals if all goes according to plan.

"All year long our mentality has been to get back to the (Mohegan) Sun," Nolan said. "That left a bitter taste in our mouths losing to the same team three times last year, especially in the finals, both the SCC and the Class LL finals. That definitely pushed us this year, wanting to get back there."

Fairfield Prep celebrates Pi Day!

Pictured above:Mr. Whiteman's Sophomore Honors Geometry Class

On Friday March 14, Mr. Whiteman’s classes celebrated Pi Day (approximately 3.14) in honor of the 3rd month and the 14th day. The students in his algebra and geometry classes took a “quiz” on Pi Day facts and trivia and learned that MIT sends its applicant decision letters on line on Pi Day, the Bible makes an indirect measurement of Pi in the book of 1 Kings, and Albert Einstein was born on Pi Day (March 14). But the highlight of each class was the contest which saw how many numbers students could memorize of the value of Pi. Top performers for the day were: Kevin Gallagher '17 - 101 digits; Jace McKenzie '17 - 71 digits; Sisso Makhraz '16- 63 digits; and John Kenny '16 – 52 digits. Mr. Whiteman is sad that Pi will fall on a weekend next year. Where will you be on March 14, 2015 at 9:26:53 (the first digits of Pi are 3.141592653)?

Prep Basketball is Class LL Runner-Up

By Doug Bonjour, Ct Post, March 23, 2014 Check back for photos & You Tube highlights.

UNCASVILLE -- Central entered Saturday's Class LL final as perhaps the state's most dominant team outside of unbeaten Fairfield Prep. That's one reason why longtime Hilltoppers coach Barry McLeod was perplexed by his team's 18-point deficit at halftime against the Jesuits.

"I just told them that 'I'm embarrassed for you. This isn't the team I've coached for two years,'" McLeod said. "'You're putting on a poor exhibition. There's no fight, there's no determination. I don't know what it is.'"

The last 16 minutes were more to the coach's liking.

The second-seeded Hilltoppers rallied to stun No. 1 Prep 76-73 at Mohegan Sun Arena for their first state title since 2010 and fifth all-time. It's the Hilltoppers' third championship under McLeod.

"This has got to be at the top," he said. "The magnitude of the game, the fact that it's the No. 1 team that hasn't lost all year, the way they've had their way and manhandled everybody, it's got to be the best."

Orhan Cecunjamin drove around Prep 7-foot-2 center Paschal Chukwu for a go-ahead layup with 21 seconds left. After Tyler Ancrum gave Central a three-point lead with two foul shots with 10 seconds remaining, Keith Pettway's 3-pointer bounced off the rim as time expired.

Both teams finished the year 27-1.

"We never quit," said forward Sha'Quan Bretoux, who scored 12 points.

Marcus Blackwell scored 17, Cecunjamin had 16 and Ancrum added 15 as the Hilltoppers capitalized off 21 turnovers. Eleven of those turnovers were forced in the third off a 2-2-1 press.

Prep shot 61 percent in the first half -- compared to only 34 percent by the Hilltoppers -- and led by as many as 19.

Chukwu posted his second triple-double of the state tournament, scoring 21 points on top of 17 rebounds and 12 blocks. Pettway and Ryan Foley each scored 17 points.

"Their pressure is a lot different from what we've been seeing," Chukwu said. "They have four guys coming up trying to stop you from dribbling."

Central led 57-56 after three quarters, but Prep regained a 66-63 lead with 4:39 left. The lead changed hands 13 times on the night.

Ultimately, the Jesuits couldn't solve Central's pressure and a hot-shooting Ancrum, who had 12 points after halftime. It was Prep's third loss in the LL final in the last four years.

"They had no choice but to come out with a reckless abandon," Prep coach Leo Redgate said. "We know how to break the pressure; it's not that. We just had too many turnovers and didn't attack the basket."

The Hilltoppers did attack the basket, and they were successful in doing so. They shot 54 percent in the second half.

"Everybody kept saying, 'Why did you keep going against him?'" Ancrum said. "... I've got more power and I've got more skills than him. That's what I came out here to do tonight."
