Fairfield Prep Basketball wins Holiday Classic Tournament

FAIRFIELD - Fairfield Prep head basketball coach Leo Redgate called Saturday’s first half performance against Notre Dame-Fairfield the best basketball his team has played to date this season. And 16 minutes was really all the Jesuits needed.

Led by an aggressive and stifling defensive effort from the start, Prep jumped out to a 25-8 and cruised to the 83-52 victory over the Lancers to win the Fairfield Holiday Tournament for the second year in a row at Alumni Hall.

“I thought we played better defense tonight than we did the other night,” said Redgate, referring to the Jesuits 109-64 win over Warde on Thursday in the opening round of the tournament. “Defensively I thought we did really well.”

The Jesuits (4-0) took advantage of some early Notre Dame (1-3) mistakes and had no trouble connecting on the offensive end. Prep’s defense held the Lancers to just five field goals in the first half and did a nice job of limiting Notre Dame’s CJ Davidson to seven points on the evening. Jaylen Jennings scored a game-high 21 points for the Lancers, with 11 of those coming in the second half.

“We were very, very, tight to start the game,” Notre Dame head coach Vin Laczkoski said. “And like true great teams they smelled blood and went after us. And give them credit; they did a very, very good job. That’s why they are No. 1 in the state.”

Prep received a balanced effort scoring as 11 players connected with the hoop, led by senior Dave Zielinski’s 18 points who was named the tournament MVP for his efforts on both ends of the floor. Prep had six players score in double figures as the Jesuits led 53-20 at the half.

Notre Dame settled down in the second half, but it was too much of an uphill climb as Prep rotated players in and didn’t let the Lancers outscore them in the final two quarters.

Redgate stressed the progression of his team and improving each game. Prep will have its first big test come Jan. 3 as they host Hillhouse in a rematch of last year’s Class LL state final “Our goal is to keep getting better,” Redgate said.

Keeping with the theme of defense, in Saturday’s consolation game of the tournament, Warde (1-3) picked up its first win over the season with a 60-50 victory over Ludlowe. “Since our first three games we’ve really put a lot of focus on our defense,” head coach Ryan Swaller said. “And the goal for us was to keep them (Ludlowe) at 50 and we kept them right there. And we knew if we did that we’d have an opportunity to win if our offense came through.”

After falling behind in the opening quarter, the Mustangs buckled down on both ends of the floor finding a nice rhyme, outscoring Ludlowe 21-10 in the second quarter. Junior Brandon Bisack connected on three 3-pointers and scored all 11 of his points to give Warde a 30-23 lead at the half. “He’s huge,” Warde senior Nick Cotto said of Bisack. “He knocked them down in practice (and) we made a nice run down there in the end of the first half.”

Ludlowe fought its way back into the game as junior Chad Peterson drove the lane to tie the game at 46 with 3:37 left. But Warde’s Giacomo Brancato and Cotto both hit jumpers and then Brancato made two free throws to build a 52-46 advantage that held. “We expended a lot of energy in the third quarter getting back into the game,” Ludlowe coach John Dailey said. “They were really ready for us. They had a good game plan.”

Warde was paced by Cotto’s 20 points and Brancato added 16. Darren Lee led Ludlowe (1-3) with 15 and Mark Malone chipped in 12. “We (had a) tough first three games but to be able to come off that, stay together and get a win here (and) to come in third place, it’s not what we wanted coming into this but we’ll take it, definitely,” Cotto said.

Jennings, Davidson, Malone, Cotto, Zielinski and Tom Nolan were all named to the all-tournament team.

Fairfield Prep to begin construction of Student Life Center

Fairfield Prep will begin construction of a Student Life Center. The Center will serve as a crossroads for important campus activities. This state-of-the-art, technology-enriched, multi-purpose facility will feature a number of specialized, but functionally related spaces. The Center will foster a synergy between the academic and co-curricular lives of the school by providing students the opportunity to meet, to interact, to explore, and to cultivate their interests outside of the classroom. The facility will include an enhanced dining area to accommodate 500 students and other school sponsored functions; an assembly area for formal and informal meetings; and office space to support various student-based programs such as Campus Ministry, the SEED Diversity Program, and Community Service. The project is to commence in the spring of 2014 and be completed in the fall of 2015.

Fairfield Prep proudly announces that by their strong character, academic success, and athletic efforts, seniors Nick Crowle and Tony Fox have earned the opportunity to compete in the sport of football while achieving their college degrees.

Nick Crowle – Football – Yale University

An outstanding student, athlete and leader in the Prep community, Nick Crowle is, in the words of one of his teachers, “destined for success.” Nick’s imprint on the Prep football program is a distinct one for both his outstanding performance on the field and for his leadership as a team captain. Nick's outstanding play this past football season was widely recognized as evidenced in the many post season awards: Walter Camp All-State Team LB; CHSCA All State Team - All classes, LB; New Haven Register All State Team – LB; USA Today All State Connecticut Team, Defensive Player of the Year, LB; Conn Post All Area – LB; MSG Varsity All Tri-State Area 2nd Team, LB; and All-SCC junior and senior years – LB. His leadership among Prep students is further confirmed by his having been chosen as a captain of Prep’s Wrestling team during his junior year and for the recognition he received being named as Prep’s Class of 2014 United States Army Scholar Athlete at the annual NHS Awards Mass. Nick has distinguished himself as one of Prep’s finest students in the Class of 2014 in achieving a 3.97 GPA and earning recognition as a member of the National Honor Society. Active in sharing his academic talents with the community, Nick is a Peer Tutor on campus and has assisted in the after school program at the Cardinal Shehan Center in Bridgeport, CT. He took on the challenge of Prep’s Urban Plunge in his junior year and is currently volunteering at the Downtown Evening Soup Kitchen in New Haven, CT. Nick is well known for his citizenship and leadership among his classmates and teammates and looks forward to continuing his academic growth and to playing football at Yale University.

Tony Fox- Football - Fordham University

Tony Fox is a standout performer on both the football team and in the Fairfield Prep school community. For the football team Tony was a three year starter at defensive end and offensive guard. His outstanding play was recognized as he earned the following awards: CHSCA All-State Class LL – DE; USA Today Connecticut All State- DE; and New Haven Register All-Area - DE. His leadership is recognized throughout the school as he is a co-captain of the football team and President of Student Government, where he has been an elected class officer for four years. Over the last two years Tony has dedicated several hours per week to serving his community at the Cardinal Shehan Center in Bridgeport, CT. Their mission is to enrich lives through learning and Tony does this by serving as a tutor in various academic subjects and as mentor to young people of all ages. At Fairfield Prep, he has further contributed to the life of the school by participating in numerous spiritual retreats and is currently serving as a group leader on Prep's Kairos Retreat. Tony is excited to continue his education at one of America's great Jesuit universities and play in Fordham's football program.

Best known as a standout performer on the Varsity Swimming and Diving team, Connor has established himself as one of the top swimmers in school history. He has been an All-SCC and All-State performer in multiple events for the past two seasons. In 2012 he was the top scorer on Prep’s State Open Championship team. In his junior season, Connor achieved All-American status in the 50 Freestyle, and as a member of the 200 Medley and 200 Freestyle Relays. Fairfield Prep’s 51st Kairos Retreat took place February 4-7, 2014, at the Holy Family Passionist Retreat Center in West Hartford, CT. Thirty seven juniors and seniors took part in the retreat. They were accompanied by fourteen team members comprised of seniors and faculty/staff. The Kairos retreat provides a special time with the Lord - “The Lord’s time.” This Christian experience focuses on prayer, reflection, friendship and community. Student candidates gave of themselves generously and by the end of the retreat were certainly committed to the Kairos spirit. A big thank you goes out to the student leaders Rector Jonathan Rodriguez, Assistant Rector Brendan Sullivan, Andres Ayala, Austin Cantwell, Tim Falvey, Tony Fox, and Stephen Walsh. Special thanks to the adult leaders Connie Carrington, Jonathan DeRosa, Suzanne Gorab, Megan Hoover, Kevin Kery, Tom Sacerdote, and Fr. Bret Stockdale, S.J.

The Kairos Retreat Program began at Fairfield Prep in 1996. This retreat program has impacted hundreds of students over the years. If you are a junior or senior at Prep do not miss out on this special opportunity for prayer, reflection and community. The final Kairos of the year is April 1-4. There is still time to apply. See Mr. Gualtiere for details.
