Halas '74 to be inducted in Great American Rivalry Series Hall of Fame

Bernstein '15 to receive student-athlete scholarship

Recognition at Fairfield Prep vs. St. Joe's football game on September 20, 1PM, at St. Joseph High School

Paul Halas '74 will be inducted into the Great American Rivalry Series Hall of Fame at the Prep football game vs. St. Joseph High School on September 20 during halftime. Additionally, varsity letterman Joshua Bernstein '15 will receive a student-athlete scholarship in a ceremony before the national anthem, recognizing his high academic and athletic achievements. The Great American Rivalry Series was created to recognize both present and past players in top rivalry games across the country. The gridiron heroes from years past have helped make the game what it is today, exemplifying all that is good about these contests and why they are embraced by communities.

Paul Halas '74 played for Fairfield Prep in the two games that marked the beginning of this fierce rivalry October 7, 1972, at St Joe’s and October 6, 1973, at Prep’s Alumni Field. As a senior and co-captain in the 1973 contest, Paul led the Jesuits to a convincing 26-0 victory over the Cadets; this win would later cement itself as a building block for Prep’s historic and illustrious 11-0 championship season. Individually, Paul accounted for 20 of the 26 points: knotting one passing and two rushing TD’s, 200 offensive yards, and two extra-point conversions. Thanks to Halas’s aerial skills, three of these scoring drives totaled 80 yards or more.  aul made first team all state that year and went on to play at Harvard University as an All-Ivy Defensive Back and Punt Returner as well as captain of Harvard’s championship Baseball team; he studied Economics and Law and was named Harvard’s top Scholar Athlete in 1978, and currently serves as General Counsel of GE Energy  Financial Services.

Joshua Bernstein '15
is a two-year letterman in both varsity football and baseball. He is a member of the National Honor Society and a Peer Tutor to students at Prep. He has provided service to the community though Urban Plunge, an urban immersion mission, and volunteered at the Cardinal Shehan Center in Bridgeport, CT. Joshua plans to study classical languages in college, and is considering a career in business management.

Prep Football blanks Branford 41-0

BRANFORD — It was over after the first quarter, but Fairfield Prep coach Tom Shea still wasn’t perfectly happy with his team’s performance.

The Jesuits had six different players score touchdowns as they blanked Branford, 41-0, at the James MacVeigh Alumni Athletic Complex.

“Our goal was to come in and improve our execution,” Shea said. “We didn’t completely do that. Our skill guys made some plays, but we weren’t really crisp up front and it won’t really cut it the next few weeks. We have to do that to become a good football team.”

Fairfield Prep (3-1) rushed for 325 yards using a myriad of backs.

Fairfield Prep’s top back, Allen Gibson, didn’t stay in the game very long as he had 10 carries for 82 yards in the first quarter and scored the first touchdown of the night less than four minutes into the game. Gibson earned the rest of the night off after that.

“He (Gibson) made some plays on his own, but that will be harder to do in the weeks to come,” Shea said. “He needs some help from our line.”

Sophomore back Ryan Marusi got a lot of work, especially in the second half. He rushed for 86 yards on 17 carries for the Jesuits.

“Branford’s been struggling. They do the right things on film, but we’re a little bigger and more experienced,” Shea said. “We wanted to make a few plays early and get some guys some work.”

Fairfield Prep quarterback Colton Smith tacked on a 16-yard run for a touchdown and threw a 22-yard scoring pass to John Dellisanti as the Jesuits took a 21-0 lead after the first quarter.

“Early on, we came out with great energy. But it’s a war of attrition,” Branford coach John Limone said. “That’s a good football team. They are big, which is a tough matchup for us. There’s no way around it.”

Patrick Conte added a 24-yard run and Jack Snopkowski returned a punt 75 yards for a touchdown as Fairfield Prep took a 34-0 lead at halftime.

“We blew some assignments,” Limone said. “I’ll look at the tape and figure out what we can do better so we can get a win.”

Marusi closed out the scoring with a 6-yard run midway through the fourth quarter.

Branford, which garnered just 96 yards of offense in the game, didn’t cross midfield into Jesuit territory until the third quarter.

Branford’s top running back Carl Williams didn’t dress due to a nagging shoulder injury. Limone said he will definitely play against Guilford next Friday night.

It was the 14th consecutive loss for the Hornets, who last won on Thanksgiving Day at East Haven in 2012.

“The important thing is our kids don’t hang their heads and don’t look at the numbers,” Limone said. “I think this is a resilient group. They still believe they can get it turned around.”
