Prep's Alvarado '14 qualifies for World Youth Championship Trials

By Mary Albl, April 17, 2013, Fairfield Minuteman

Fairfield Prep’s Christian Alvarado was first contacted through Twitter this month that he had qualified for the World Youth Championship Trials this summer. “I was more surprised than anything,” he said.

Alvarado, a standout junior distance runner, qualified for the trials at Southern Illinois University in Edwardsville, Ill. (June 25-30) in the 1,500 meter run, 3,000 and 2,000 steeplechase. Alvarado said the plan is to make the United States team in the 2,000 steeplechase.

“It's something that I never really thought about since it is only every two years,” he said.

According to USA.milesplit.com, the first two finishers in each event, provided they have meet the IAAF World Youth championship qualifying standard, will be placed in a pool and the team will be selected from that pool. This year only 40 members total will be selected for the United States team.

If all goes according to plan, and Alvarado runs well and qualifies, he will be headed to the World Youth Championships, which are held in Donetsk, Ukraine (July 10-14).

“This would be huge no doubt,” Alvarado said. “Not many high school athletes get the chance to compete on an international level, the highest level an athlete can complete on. It would definitely be the icing on the cake and possibly more for my junior year.”

Alvarado is in the midst of the outdoor track and field season at Prep. He finished the indoor season winning numerous titles, including the 2 mile at New Englands in Boston and placing well at the New Balance Indoor Championships in New York City in March.

He is set to compete at the Penn Relays at the University of Pennsylvania next weekend, April 25-27. He will be running the 3,000. “(I’m) going to try to break our school record set by Connor Rog (8:31) at the Penn Relays too,” he said.

Fairfield Prep lacrosse edges Greenwich

By Ryan Lacey, Thursday, April 25, 2013, CT Post

The Jesuits had to dig deep to pull out a win against one of many teams trying to take away their title as the best team in Connecticut. Kevin Brown (four goals, one assist) and David White (two goals) combined for seven points as the Jesuits held off hard-charging Greenwich for a 7-6 victory on Wednesday, their fifth straight win. Greenwich (6-2), meanwhile, saw its six-game win streak come to an end.

"We have a battle-tested group," said Fairfield Prep coach Chris Smalkais, whose team improved to 6-2. "We have a number of seniors that have been three-year starters. They know what it takes to perform at a high level; they understand what competition is."

After tallying just three goals in 40 minutes of action, the Cardinals' offense burst into life in the form of Kyle Foote. The senior scored consecutive goals 43 seconds apart, on identically positioned isolation sets, cutting a 6-3 deficit to 6-5. Brown reestablished a two-goal lead with 5:15 left before Alex Moeser made it 7-6 with 3:31 left.

"Every game you're not sure who's going to get it but (Foote) started getting hot and we rode him," Greenwich coach Scott Bulkley said. "He's a very special player for us. With Kyle, (Moeser), (Declan Curran) and a lot of other guys, we have guys that can fill it up."

And then the drama began. Moeser fired wide with 2:21 left, but the Jesuits were unable to run out the rest of the clock. The Cardinals took possession with 1:16 left and had multiple chances to tie. Foote fired a shot that bounced off the post and clear, and a last-ditch shot from 25 yards out by Ryan Flippin with seconds remaining was blocked by the Jesuits' defense.

"I'm extremely proud of my team, they didn't give up and they fought back," Bulkley said. "If you want to win a game like this, you have to bury those shots (Greenwich hit the post six times) and they're going to learn that. I'm extremely proud of my guys. There is a lot of good things we did; the only thing we missed was finishing our own shots."

The defending Class L champion Jesuits got just enough offense to win on a day when shooting accuracy was hard to come by. That, combined with a pair of outstanding performances in the cage by Prep's Connor Henry and Greenwich's William Waesche, made scoring very difficult.

"I thought we didn't finish our scoring opportunities throughout the game," Smalkais said. "We had lots of really good scoring opportunities and we didn't score, which didn't really allow us to separate ourselves like I thought we would at certain parts of the game."

Cardinals faceoff man Graham Savio kept his team in the game with crucial draw controls during the fourth-quarter frenzy. The senior captain had missed the last 10 days with a concussion but returned to make an immediate impact.

"(Savio) played great, he did have a little rust in the beginning, but I thought he really started to pick it up at the end," Bulkley said. "He's a huge part of our team. He can keep us in any game. Any game we fall behind in we can get right back in it because of him."

The two teams entered Wednesday ranked among the top five of virtually every state lacrosse poll. While that could mean a rematch between these non-conference foes in the state tournament, Smalkais wants his team to peak at the right time of the year.

"The season is a journey, not a sprint," Smalkais said. "It's April 24th; we have a long way to go to get to June. We are constantly improving on a daily basis; we hope to be playing lacrosse in June."

Prep Fathers and Sons volunteer for Groundwork Bridgeport

On April 27, over 30 Prep fathers and sons gathered for a spring community service project. In conjunction with Groundwork Bridgeport, the crew spent the day helping to develop the Reservoir Community Farm -- a production garden for Green Village Initiative.

The 2-acre farm, located in north Bridgeport, will provide fresh produce for residents of the local community for five months each year. The site was once home to a blighted strip mall that had been abandoned for almost 20 years. Local residents joined the Prep students and their fathers to build this valuable asset in the neighborhood. Projects for the day included building, siting and leveling planting beds; as well as moving dozens of yards of topsoil and mulch.

Prepsters Serve in Ecuador Immersion Trip

During April break, Fairfield Prep students Anthony Cosenza ’14, Tyrone Fleurizard ’14, Robert Fumai ’14, Ta’Von Givens-Hunter ’14, Timothy O’Rourke ’15, Connor Richardson ’14, Jonathan Rodrigues ’14, Aaron Simkovitz ’14, Jeffrey Skiba ’14, Matthew Wood ’14 traveled to Guayaquil, Ecuador, on a service immersion trip led by Jairo Martinez ’14, and Prep faculty members Corey Dennis, Anthony Dotolo, Steve Nicholson, nSJ.

While the week was packed with opportunities and experiences of all sorts, our host organization, Rostro de Cristo (The Face of Christ), encouraged the group to focus more on “being” than on “doing.” It was through this emphasis on building relationships with the people of Ecuador that the group was profoundly affected, whether visiting neighbors, touring schools and development NGOs, spending time with patients at a Hansen’s disease hospital (formerly known as leprosy), or learning about the culture and politics of our host country. The group returned full of gratitude for the warm welcome received, and transformed by having truly seen the face of Christ in the Ecuadorian people.

For his leadership, community service and academic achievement, Mark H. Giannini ‘13 has been chosen as a Gates Millennium Scholar for 2013. The program also provides leadership development opportunities to ensure that scholars graduate prepared to become strong leaders in their professions and in their communities. Mark plans to attend the University of Notre Dame and pursue studies in applied mathematics and chemistry.

Mark has explored his talents and interests through academics, service, campus ministry and by his involvement in a number and variety of clubs and organizations. His involvement in service goes beyond the Prep campus as Mark has both experienced "Urban Plunge" and served as a leader of the urban immersion service program. Stepping outside the region, Mark traveled to Tierra Blanca, El Salvador, to participate in Prep’s service mission there. Mark understands the life changing potential of being selected as a Gates Millennium Scholar, and looks forward to exercising his leadership and continuing his journey of growth at the University of Notre Dame. Fr. Martin Shaughnessy, S.J., to speak at Fairfield Prep Graduation

Fairfield Prep is pleased to welcome back Rev. Martin G. Shaughnessy, S.J., as the featured speaker at the 71st Commencement Exercises to be held on June 2, 2013, in Alumni Hall. Fr. “Marty” Shaughnessy served as a theology teacher at Prep for 42 years, until his recent assignment in 2010 to Boston College High School as Minister of the Jesuit Community. During his time at Prep, he became a living legend, utilizing his intelligence, oratorical prowess, and humor to teach and engage young men in theology class. When he left Prep, students, faculty and staff gathered in Kartovsky Quad and cheered for him as he retired his JUG (Justice under God) flag, Star Wars light saber and Moses stick - inspiring all to follow the Lord and proclaim "Hallelujah!" (See video!) Fr. Shaughnessy has influenced thousands of students passing through the halls of Fairfield Prep, and the graduating Class of 2013 was the last Prep class to experience him as a teacher during freshman year.

At Fairfield Prep, Fr. Shaughnessy was elected to the Hall of Fame in 1985, served as chaplain to both the football team and wrestling teams, and moderated several clubs including the Senior Key Club, Current Events Club and Weather Club. In 2011, Prep instituted the annual Rev. Martin G. Shaughnessy S.J., Ignatian Educator of the Year Award in his namesake, which is awarded to a Prep staff member who demonstrates the highest qualities of an educator following the Jesuit mission, ideals and teaching tenets. He assisted in the spiritual ministry at Prep, and also worked within the Diocese of Bridgeport training catechists and providing pastoral ministry in parishes. He spent much time serving at Notre Dame Parish in Easton, where he celebrated the Children’s Masses regularly and helped in the formation of catechetical teachers.

Fr. Shaughnessy was born in South Boston in 1931, and graduated from Boston College High School. He attended Boston College, entered the Society of Jesus in 1951, and attended the Weston College of Theology; graduating with an A.B. from Boston College and earning an M.A. in Philosophy and an advanced degree in Theology from Weston College and Boston College. He was ordained a priest on June 15, 1963. He additionally attained an M.A. in Education from Boston College, and an M.A. in teaching religion at University of San Francisco. In Lenox, MA, he served as Assistant Director of Novices.

Over his vast and accomplished Jesuit career, Fr. Shaughnessy has worked in teaching and pastoral work all over the United States, including Connecticut, California, Utah, Maine, North and South Carolinas, Florida, New York, Massachusetts, Washington and Alaska (where he experienced two earthquakes). He also served in communities in Jamaica and the Bahamas. The Fairfield Prep Community is honored to welcome Fr. Shaughnessy back to our campus, and we look forward to hearing his inspiring words for the Class of 2013.
