Flag Football battles on McAuliffe Hill!

Flag Football Intramurals culminate in Championship!

For the second straight year, Fairfield Prep’s Intramural Flag Football League provided heated competition. Moderated and officiated by Mr. Corey Dennis, ten teams (divided up by four divisions, AFC North/South and NFC North/South) of 62 Prep players battled on “The Hill” for five weeks until a champion was crowned. In the League, the top two seeded teams earned a first round bye in the playoffs. All division winners earned a spot in the playoffs, in addition to two Wild Card teams. At the end of the season, an undefeated Sophomore-lead NFC Champion “The Black Mambas” competed against the AFC Champion “Team Four” in the Championship Game of the League. While The Black Mambas put together an undefeated season to that point, they were overcome by the organized and physical “Team Four.” For the second straight year, underclassmen have made it to The Championship Game only to fall short to senior teams. Congratulations to “Team Four” for winning the second Fairfield Prep Intramural Flag Football Championship!

Gaelic Football plays at Irish Festival!

Gaelic Football to play Xavier at Fairfield Irish Festival!

Fairfield Prep will make history at the Irish Festival! Fairfield Prep’s new Gaelic Football Club will be taking on Xavier of Middletown Friday night, June 14, in what will be the first-ever high-school Gaelic Football match in Connecticut or, indeed, in the United States. Gaelic Football—Ireland’s biggest traditional sport—combines the speed, skills and suspense of soccer as well as basketball, and it predates both sports. Friday’s game, on Fairfield University’s main athletic field, will be one of the lead-off events at this year’s annual Fairfield County Irish Festival. For more information, visit the Festival’s website, www.irishfestival.org, or Facebook at FP Gaelic Football.

Gaelic Football Team launched

Fairfield Prep's Gaelic Football team held its first practice under sunny skies in April. Gaelic football - Ireland's biggest traditional sport - is a fast-paced game that combines elements of soccer, rugby and basketball, even though it long predates all three. The team has been formed in conjunction with Prep's Irish Cultural Club. The founding players will continue to practice through the Spring in hopes of staging Connecticut's first-ever inter-scholastic Gaelic Football game with a club match against Xavier. Any interested students should contact team captains/Club presidents Liam Coyle '13 and Davie Bruton '13. The moderator of the Irish Culture Club is Mr. Griffin Reidy, theology teacher.

The Prep golf team experienced a resurgence to state prominence this season. Captains Jack O’Leary '13 and George Archer '13 led a deep squad that was solid for most of the season and very impressive by the end. During the regular season, 15 different players saw action in a varsity level match. By the end of the season, that depth helped to propel Prep to its best State Tournament finish in 4 years, once again placing fourth in the Division 1 State Tournament. Prep, with a team score of 310, trailed only Pomperaug HS (303), Simsbury HS (307) and Greenwich HS (308). Prep freshman Andrew Sciarretta (left) finished as co-medalist at the tournament with a 2-under par score of 70, earning a spot in the New England High School Championship.

At the Chappa Invitational in May, Prep’s two-man team of Andrew Sciarretta '16 and George Archer '13 finished tied for 12th place among 82 teams with an even par score of 69. Prep was one of only 16 teams to shoot par or better that day at Longshore.

The 2013 team bids a fond farewell to the seniors, grateful for their contributions to the success of the team in the last four years: George Archer, Jack O’Leary, Brian McAvey, Ryan King and Jack Dardis. With 14 experienced players returning next year, the future looks bright for Prep.

STAMFORD -- Appreciation for a life's work well done is something to strive for. For those involved in athletics, the Hall of Fame is the most likely measuring stick for success.

Six more prominent sports figures from the area received their just accolades as the Fairfield County Sports Hall of Fame unveiled their Class of 2013 inductees Wednesday at their museum wing located at the Stamford UConn campus.

Into the Jackie Robinson Professional Wing went current ATP pro tennis player James Blake of Fairfield along with former major league umpire Mark Hirschbeck of Stratford. Now gracing the James O'Rourke Amateur Wing are former University of New Haven baseball standout Dennis Paglialunga of New Canaan and Raybestos Brakettes softball legend the late Allyson Rioux of Stamford. Inducted into the J. Walter Kennedy Community Service Wing were legendary Fairfield Prep football coach Earl Lavery as well as former Fairfield University, University of Hartford and Sacred Heart University athletic director Don Cook.

"I'm very honored to be selected," said Lavery currently enjoying retirement and golf in Rhode Island. "To look at the plaques of the inductees already on this wall and to be included in their company is very special indeed."

Lavery never had a losing season in his 24 years (1968-1992) coaching Fairfield Prep football. He retired with a record of 230-54-8 and three state football titles. At the time, his 230 victories were ranked No. 1 among Connecticut state high school football coaches. At present, Lavery's total ranks No. 7.

Lavery marvels at the instant video technology available today as opposed to the 8-millimeter game films sent out for next-day exposure during his tenure. But he feels one part of high school football has remained the same. "It is still about team. Kids can do things together that they can't do individually," said Lavery, who was voted into the CT High School Coaches Hall of Fame in 1991. "Good relationships with the kids remain the key. Success was always a team thing, not just about me."
